This is me… John Anthony Kitchen. All my friends and family call me TONY.
I settled in Kirton in Lindsey in 1985, prior to me retiring after 23 years in the British Army, at the local barracks, in 1987.
I’ve held various engineering jobs from manufacturing exhausts for HGV’s, large tanks and vessels for liquids and tubular garden furniture.
In 2000 I had a serious accident at work and I was made redundant. After this, it was impossible to get a job with my injury, so I looked elsewhere for “work”.
I decided I could use my skills to help the people of Kirton, so I joined the Council.
I saw that the War Memorial railings were in poor state, so set about, with the Council’s approval, to improve said railings. The parts were purchased and I welded them together in a weekend. I requested Jack Tighe Ltd to paint all the railings, which they did to a very high standard. A small group of volunteers then spent a weekend digging holes and siting the railings. The end result is what you see today.
We had a memorial service held on The Green to commemorate the 12 American airmen from Eagle Squadron who perished during WW2. I acquired 12 white doves which were released at the service.
I convinced the windmill that they did not need all the worn millstones. One millstone is at the start of Kirton on North Cliff Road.
I built a rockery on North Cliff Road and planted lavender.
I’ve bolted down many wooden benches around the town.
I’ve repaired many taps in the town’s cemetery.
I had built a concrete base so we could place a wooden bench at the bottom of the High Street.
In 2014 I founded Kirton in Lindsey Archery Club. Two junior members represent Lincolnshire County.
At present I inspect the children’s play area on The Green, to keep our children safe.
